I'd love to read your take on it. I've been listening to it all week and I adore it. Of course I'd heard a good deal of the material from bootlegs and such, but it's always a treat to hear Gil and Dave, or Dave and Gil, with full-band instrumentation.

As much as I love the new album, as hard as I'm trying to resist saying saying so--I understand that A Friend of a Friend is its own thing--it does make me drool a bit for the new Welch record. This, even though I've been annoyed with every interviewer who has taken the DRM release as an opportunity to grill Dave about the new Gillian.

Dave's playing on AFoaF is so classy. I'm always impressed at how he reins in his guitar when he's got a band. You can hear him, obviously, and the playing's as sick as ever, but it's nothing like when he's playing with just Gillian and his archtop has to suggest piano, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and third harmony vocal.

What do you think?

and it looks as if there *is* a new Gillian Welch release escaping soon too:--source, the interview with Dave Rawlings quoted below

Q: When will Gillian Welch's long-awaited next record come out?

A: We're finishing Gillian's record now. That's the next thing on the docket, and it should be out next year. I am beyond excited to finally get that out in the world.

Yeah, he's been dropping that little nugget in interviews, but I've just had my heart broken so many times... :)

Hmmm...yes... but don't you think he's sounding much more definite than some of the past comments? (After all, in an interview last spring about the Machine album, one of them had said they were 'working on an album that might never be released' and they released it...) so, here's hoping.
